1997 Season in Review

Tori Seibert continued to earn honors in the 1997 season being named for a second time to the second-team All ACC team.

Carolina swept Wake Forest in the 1997 season beating the Demon Deacons both times they met. The first game, Oct. 4th at Wake, the team won in four games. In the second meeting, Nov. 7th the Heels won in five games.

Erin Berg had a season high 68 assists against N.C. State Oct. 28th.

The Tar Heels took on a defending National Champion for the second consecutive season in 1997 when the Stanford Cardinals visited Carolina September 12th. Unlike when Carolina upset defending national champion Nebraska in 1996, the Heels lost the match against the Cardinals in three games.

Senior Erin Berg needs only 1,029 more assists to break the 5,000 mark in the 1998 season. She added 1,268 assists during the 1997 season.

Tar Heel outside hitter Tori Seibert was perhaps Carolina's most consistent player in '97 and was among the best players in the ACC as a sophomore. Seibert led the team in individual games in kills (25), hitting percentage (.769), solo blocks (4), and total blocks (10).

Carolina ventured one-third of the way around the world in the 1997 season to take on national powerhouses Hawaii, UCLA and Houston at the Hawaii Rainbow Classic. While in the Aloha State, the Tar Heels played in front of their largest crowds in history. On Sept. 6th 7,613 fans came to see the Heels play Hawaii and 6,393 came the next day to watch the team take on the Bruins.

There was no place like home during the 1997 Carolina/Nike Fall Invitational. In their opening tournament, the Heels swept the competition with wins over Virginia Tech, Southern Illinois, Conneticut and Akron to claim the crown of the season opening tournamnet.

Outside Hitter Casey Simpson played in 52 games and 23 matches and had the highest attack percentage (.156) of the 1997 freshman class.

Junior setter Erin Berg was UNC's leader on the floor, pacing the Heels with a career high 1,268 assists. This places her third on Carolina's all-time assist list with 3,971.

Senior Outside Hitter Maya Starks played in more games (111) than any other Tar Heel. Sophomore Middle Hitter Shannon Smith was second on the team with appearances in 109 games.

Three returning Carolina players, Erin Berg, Shannon Smith and Maya Starks, played in all 31 matches in the 1997 season.

It was a personal best season for junior Alicia Alford in 1997. She had career highs in kills (187), assists (30), digs (216), service aces (21) and block assists (77).

Tori Seibert earned the first ACC Player of the Week honors for the 1997 season September 1st.

Allison Hobson earned the UNC Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award for Volleyball in 1997.

The Tar Heels were one of the last teams to play on the old floor at Carmichael Auditorium in 1997. This season the Heels will enjoy an all new playing floor.

There were three seniors on last year's squad. Lori Carlson, Allison Hobson and Jill Peden all finished their eligiblity with Carolina in 1997.

As freshmen, Lisa Fryer and Liz Feldman were the two defensive specialists for the team in 1997. Fryer recorded 53 digs for the season and Feldman had a season high 5 digs against Houston on Sept. 7th.

Tori Seibert quickly moved toward the 1,000 career kill mark in the 1997 season, recording 433 kills to total 833 career kills. Maya Starks was close behind with 304 kills for the 1997 season, bringing her total to 813 career kills.

The 1998 Spring season was very successful for the Tar Heels. The team won the UNC and Duke tournament. Freshmen Casey Simpson, Brooke Ruschiensky, Liz Feldman and Lisa Fryer were all significant contributors in preparation for the 1998 season.

Junior Outside Hitter Alicia Alford participated in the spring season for the first time in her career. Alford had previously been participating on the Carolina women's basketball team during the volleyball spring season.

Brooke Ruschiensky was the only international player on the 1997 Carolina team. The Canadian saw playing time in 14 of 16 regular season matches.
