"The enviroment in Carmichael is an extremely postive one for our team and there
is definite home-court advantage for us here," says head coach Joe Sagula. "The
crowds appreciate good volleyball and really get into the matches. I think if
you get people to come to just one match in Carmichael, they'll come back
because they find it to be a fun and exciting night of volleyball." This
became evident when Carolina drew over 7,000 fans for the match against
rival Wake Forest.
Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Gymnastics, Wrestling and Fencing all practice
and compete in this spacious arena, which was the site of the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival volleyball competitions. Carmichael has been site of fifteen women's

The auditorium is named for the late William D. Carmichael Jr., a former comptroller and vice-president of the University. He also served as the Consolidated University's
acting president and he died in 1961. Carmichael Auditorium adjoins Woolen Gymnasium, a
long-time site of varsity competition and the current home of physical education and
intramural activities.
The Auditorium recently had a new floor installed after a fire in the spring of 1998.
The new floor proved to be a good omen for that year's volleyball team as the sqaud
went undefeated in Carmichael, winning all 17 games at home including victories over
non-conference opponents Notre Dame and Tennessee.
The success continues in 1999 as the Tar Heels finished the season with an 11-1 record
at Carmichael and captured their 7th ACC title. In 2000 the success at Carmichael as they went 15-2 and they added another ACC title and another chapter to the storied
Carolina Volleyball tradition.
The newest addition to Carmichael Auditorium can be spotted high up in the rafters, where the volleyball team was honored with two banners commemorating its 8th ACC title and the team's performance at NCAA Championships.
