North Carolina head volleyball coach Joe Sagula and his staff has set the dates for the Carolina Volleyball Camps for the summer of 2003. Let the staff and players that led the Tar Heels to a No. 11 national ranking and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance be a part of your volleyball camp experience. There will also be coaches from all around the country and region, as well as a special guest coach.

Skills Camp - July 14-17 (Girls Ages 11-16)
Junior High and High School Girls. This youth camp is designed for beginners to the intermediate levels and will offer instruction and training in the skills and techniques of passing, setting, attacking, serving and defense. Emphasis is placed on developing court movement, ball control, as well as game competition. A variety of drills, games and competition will be used to put these techniques into practice. Campers are divided by age, skill level, and experience onto courts, which provide the appropriate learning environment. This camp session is geared for young players grades 7 to 10. This camp is a four day (9 sessions) camp ideal for the young player. The fee includes tuition, housing, all meals and a camp T-shirt.

    The Carolina/Nike High Potential Camp - July 13-17

    MINI CAMP I: Setter or Hitter, July 19-20 (ages 12-16)
    The mini camps are designed for the player interested in specialized skill training. This camp is geared for the beginner to intermediate level female player with basic skills in grades 7 to 10 interested in an intense 2 days of drills and training. This camp is a two-day (4 session) training camp. The fee includes tuition, housing, meals and t-shirt.

    New! Youth Skills Camp, July 19-20 (boys/girls 10-14)
    This camp is designed as an introduction to volleyball for beginners and will offer instruction and training in the skills and techniques of passing, setting, attacking, serving. Campers are divided by age, skill level, and experience onto courts, which provide the appropriate learning environment. This camp session is geared for young players grades 5 to 9.     Position Skills Camp, July 21-24 (girls ages 13-18)
    This combination camp is designed to train players in their skill positions (outside hitter, middle hitter, setter, defensive specialist/libero,) in a team-play setting. There will be skill training in the mornings and competition in afternoon and evenings. This also allows for small groups to compete together when full teams are not available. This camp is geared for more experienced high school players with at least 2 years of training. Open to girls in grades 9 to 12. This camp is a four days (10 sessions) and includes tuition, housing, all meals, camp T-shirt. Players will be grouped into teams for competitions each evening.

    Team Skills Camp, July 21-24 (girls, ages 13-18)
    This camp session provides members of junior and senior high school teams the opportunity to train together, while learning and refining their volleyball skills. Skill development is emphasized in daily drills along with team systems /concepts. Games will be played each day where campers compete against other players of similar level and ability. Applications for this camp must be submitted together, with a team of 8 or more one coach attends free.   • Early check-in special: Teams traveling from longer distances may check-in on Sunday, July 20 and have two extra sessions in the gym (Sunday evening & Monday morning). There will be a special reduced charge for the extra night for dormitory and meal, for only $45. per person.

    Competition Team Camp, July 25-27 (girls ages 13-18)
    This session now in our second year provides Teams (varsity, JV, & middle school) the opportunity to train together and compete in drills and scrimmages and tournament play before their school season begins. Teams must attend with their own coach and will be provided court time for practice, drills and scrimmages. Carolina staff will provide lectures/lessons prior to the start of each session. One coach attends at no charge (minimum of 8 players) and will be responsible for supervising their team. This camp includes meals, housing, camp T-shirt and tournament prizes ... Coaches must e-mail or call ahead to reserve a space for their school. (Team campers must have a $100 minimum deposit per camper with application by May 1, 2003).

    Elite Setter & Hitter Camps July 25-27 (girls, ages 15-18)
    SETTER CAMP is limited to 30 setters and specially designed sessions are geared for the advanced level setter. Concentration on skill development with training in footwork, techniques, setter attack skills, and various set types.
    HITTER CAMP will focus on a variety of attack skills from the outside hitter position, the middle hitter and quick attack, and the right side and play-set hitter. Footwork, arm swing, and blocking skills will also be a primary focus. Please indicate which hitting position (OH, MH, RS) you will emphasize.

  • The ELITE CAMPS are a three-day (6 session) training camp. The fee includes tuition, housing, meals and t-shirt.

    Since the beginning of our camps, the single most important factor has been the superb coaching. In addition to the Tar Heel coaching staff and players, the camp staff will consist of collegiate players, outstanding NCAA & NAIA collegiate coaches, high school and junior high school coaches as well as highly respected junior development (USAV) coaches from the Carolina region and through out the country. The camper to counselor ratio will be 8 to 1, allowing each camper to receive individual attention as well as small group instruction. Many of the Carolina Volleyball Camp staff coaches return every summer because they enjoy the way in which Carolina camps are run and coaching the quality players who attend camp. Each summer special guest coaches (college coaches or national collegiate players) work at Carolina, that provides a great experience for all.


    REGISTRATION, HOUSING & MEALS

  • REGISTRATION Campers are required to register by completing the application form and have their parent/guardian sign the waiver statements, and include insurance information with FULL PAYMENT made payable to: Carolina Volleyball Camps, Inc. No refunds after July 1, 2003. All refunds are subject to a $100.00 administrative fee and is NON-REFUNDABLE. If a health or injury prohibits participation prior to camp a Physicians letter explaining the circumstances must accompany a written request for a refund.

  • CONFIRMATION Upon receipt of camp tuition, completed application, and signed waivers and insurance information you will receive a confirmation letter with registration locations, physical health form, and additional information on travel, what to bring to camp, etc. Enrollment is limited, with applications accepted on a first come basis until the camps are full.   • KEY DEPOSITS Each camper is required to bring a $20 key deposit in cash or separate check. The deposit will be returned after camp when keys are turned in.

  • MEDICAL CARE All campers must have their own accident and health Insurance. The Carolina Volleyball Camp provides only excess coverage after your insurance has been utilized. A certified NATA athletic trainer will attend to minor injuries and illnesses and is available for all camp sessions, and resides in the dormitory during camp. Campers will not be allowed to play unless the information is submitted and the forms signed by the parent or guardian of the camper. A health insurance and medical information form will be mailed to you upon receipt of your application.

  • HOUSING & MEALS: All campers will be housed (two per room) on the campus of the University of North Carolina. All campers will be housed in totally air-conditioned Granville Towers, located in University Square, adjacent to campus on Franklin Street. MEALS, The food is superb (all you can eat) right at Granville Towers, with other amenities including: swimming pool, cable T.V. in lounges, laundry facilities, and convenient location between town and campus.

  • ROOMMATE REQUESTS If you have a specific roommate preference, we will do all that we can to honor the request. However, roommate requests are not guaranteed. There are two campers to a room, 4 to a suite. If you do not have a preference, we will try to match you with someone who is your age, on your team at camp, or from your city or state.


    SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Campers who attend consecutive camps are offered FREE housing for the evening between camps.

  • COMMUTER campers and commuter coaches will be pick-up and drop-off from Granville Towers. Lunch and dinner meals are included daily for all commuters.

  • COACHES Any coach that accompanies a team of 8 or more to a camp is provided room & meals. The coach will have supervising responsibilities during their attendance. Any additional coaches will pay a $140 registration fee.

  • ALL CAMPERS receive a CAROLINA Volleyball/Nike tee-shirt (please indicate your size on the application form), all meals and housing is included with registration.


    FACILITIES, TRAVEL, EQUIPMENT

  • FACILITIES: Camp sessions are conducted on the UNC Campus and local schools. Facilities include the Dean E. Smith Center, Fetzer Gymnasium, Woolen Gym, and Carmichael Auditorium, the home arena of Carolina Volleyball. The indoor Athletic Facility (Eddie Smith Field House) will be used for the Team, Position, and Setter/Hitter Camps. In addition, swimming pools, racquetball courts, soccer fields, and track are conveniently located for all campers. The Carolina Volleyball Camps allow the athlete to experience the university setting in beautiful Chapel Hill. Each session is a unique opportunity for any young volleyball player. Each camper benefits from the exposure to the university community as well as from the intensive volleyball instruction.

  • TRAVEL Directions and maps will be forwarded to each applicant upon receipt of application. Campers fly into Raleigh-Durham Airport. Call Anthony Travel 919-843-5580 - for discounted fare, you must identify yourself as a Carolina VOLLEYBALL Camper. All domestic airlines travel to RDU International Airport (American, Delta, US Air, Midway, United, TWA, Continental, etc.) Shuttle Ground Transportation to and from RDU and the camp (just 20 minutes away) can also be provided at a cost of $30.00 round-trip. Check the box on the application form, and a travel form will be sent with registration packet to reserve space on the shuttle. Three weeks notice is required.

  • ITEMS TO BRING TO CAMP Lots of t-shirts, shorts, and socks. Kneepads, volleyball shoe or court shoes, sandals, swimsuit. Bed linens, pillow, blanket, (all rooms are air-conditioned) towels and personal items, and alarm clock.

  • VOLLEYBALL Campers will be allowed to pre-purchase the official camp ball used at all the 2003 Carolina Camps. An official MIKASA leather volleyball with the Carolina Camp logo imprinted, will be available for sale at a special discount of $42.00. Check the appropriate box on the application to pre-order. (There will only be a limited supply of balls to purchase on site).

  • CAMP STORE Features the latest in volleyball equipment and apparel by NIKE, Mikasa, camp specials.

  • COLLEGE RECRUITING Learn about college volleyball and the recruiting process. Coach Sagula and the UNC Academic Counselors conduct sessions during team camp and advanced sessions for reviewing the steps necessary to play on a collegiate team from SAT/ACT exams, applications for college, and meeting with coaches. *(NCAA regulations allow graduating high school seniors to participate in summer camps.
