Each season, new players become part of the UNC Volleyball family. The freshman/newcomer who contributes the most to the program is selected as the Rookie of the Year. This award, as voted on by her teammates, and reconginzes the players ability to play a significant role and in the future of the UNC Volleyball program.

Mighty Ram(Given in the Spring)
Is presented to the volleyball player who has demonstraed the most improvement in the spring season. They have set goals and met the challenges with improvements in their strength and fitness, volleyball skill, competitive performance in competition. The Mighty Ram is presented in honor of the Tar Heel traditions of competition and th battling ram "Rameses."

The Carol and J. Hawley Oakes Award for Excellence
Throughout the course of a volleyball season and/or a players career, there emerges an individual who sets high goals and works very hard every day to achieve these goals. She demonstrates consistency and a competitive drive that sets a standard for her team's performance. Her teammates and coaches admire this ongoing pursuit of excellence. Carol and Hawley Oakes have been loyal friends and patrons of Carolina Volleyball since 1987. Their loyalty and support to UNC Volleyball is recognized as an inspiration to the recipient of this annual Award for Excellence.

The John C. Lotz Memorial Award
John Lotz was a teacher, a coach, a mentor, counselor and friend to hundreds of athletes, coaches and administrators throughout his career. He was an assistant coach to Dean Smith from 1965 to 1973, and an Associate Athletic Director at UNC directing the community outreach programs from 1980 to 2000. He was a man who deeply cared about the University and the athletes who represent it with character, with faith and leadership. His loyalty and support reached far beyond the competitive arena. The winner of this award shows many of the same qualities that Coach Lotz embodied. This award goes to the "unsung hero" of the team, who is willing to help her teammates succed, and who also reaches into the community to help the less fortunate.

The Jean E. Kindy Memorial Award
Jean Kindy was one of the first supporters of the Carolina Volleyball program. Jean and Walt's daughter Mindy played volleyball for UNC in 1983. And in 1993 the family endowed one of the first volleyball scholarships with the Educational Foundation. Jean endured many obstacles in her lige and battles wih various health problems. Through it all she showed great preseverance and maintained a positive outlook. Jean worked with the Educational Foundation from 1990 - 2001 and in spite of all her difficulties she continually showed determination and was an inspiration to everyone. This award is a tribute to her loyality and support of our volleyball program.
